It was an absolute pleasure to visit K'gari (formally known as Fraser Island) and The Fraser Coast in September.
K'gari is the name given to the island by the Traditional Owners and it means 'paradise'. K'gari is world heritage listed and the world's largest sand island.
75 mile beach is incredible to see, but it's not a swimming beach given the high shark populations off the coast.
We stayed in Hervey Bay and opted to do a 2 day tour with K'gari Explorer Tours, as you have to have a 4WD vehicle to get around the island, and some of the navigation in the sand would be extremely challenging on your own.
It's strange to see so many vehicles heading up and down the beach at times, we even watched small planes take off and land!
One of the most famous sites to see on K'gari is The Maheno, a ship wreck caused by a cyclone in 1935.
Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast are also well known for whale watching. Whales can be seen from July to November, with the best viewing normally from August to October.
