I flew into South Africa early July to commence a month long series of safari adventures in South-Central Africa and East Africa. It was my second safari focused trip to Africa and I'd love to go again.
I thought my first trip would be my 'once in a lifetime' safari trip and it did not disappoint! I explored a number of amazing camps in Southern Tanzania, and was very excited about the opportunity to go again. On both trips I travelled with friends from Argentina who are African Travel specialists, and I highly recommend Allan and Muriel to anyone wanting advice on African or South American travel.
This year's trip involved transits via Johannesburg pre and post trip for the itinerary below. In Johannesburg we stayed at the Peermont Mondior which has a very convenient free pick-up and drop-off shuttle bus service from the airport.
VICTORIA FALLS (ZIMBABWE) staying at ILALA LODGE HOTEL
The tour offically started after flying in to Victoria Falls.
We stayed at a lovely hotel, and from there headed out on a sunset cruise of the Zambezi river, the 4th longest river in Africa.
The next day we visited the famous Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world.
SOUTHERN KAFUE (ZAMBIA) staying at NANZHILA PLAINS SAFARI CAMP
Sadly the end of my Zimbabwe trip and my entire time at this first camp in Zambia were tainted, as I got very unwell and had to spend several days in bed. I caught an upper respiratory tract infection on the plane I believe, and it flattened me.
CENTRAL KAFUE (ZAMBIA) staying at KAINGU LODGE
Located on the Kafue River, this is a spectacular place to stay for land and river safaris. They also make an incredible beetroot chocolate cake 😊, I'm not normally that excited about cake but this was so good I've been planning to try and make it at home.
SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK (ZAMBIA) staying at FLATDOGS CAMP
Another fantastic safari location to see wildlife in the water and on land. Elephants, hippos and other wildlife freely roam the camp, so it was important to be even more vigilant with where we were walking and when.
With almost every location you are not to walk anywhere unescorted after sunset.
NAIROBI (KENYA) staying at THE BOMA HOTEL
We only had 1 day to explore Nairobi and took the opportunity to visit an elephant orphanage and giraffe conservation centre.
It was a pleasure to visit Sheldrick Wildlife Trust as they have been doing great work to rescue and raise orphaned elephants for decades. They have helped well over 100 elephants, and they also had a beautiful baby rhino in care when we visited. I was also pleased that opening hours are strictly for 1 hour each day during feeding time.
In addition to community education, a major activity of the Giraffe Centre is their breeding program for the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. When the calves are old enough to survive on their own they are released into the wild.
SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE (KENYA) staying at SAMBURU INTREPIDS TENTED CAMP
See Cheetah in th wild was a true highlight of this trip for me.
NAIVASHA (KENYA) staying at LAKE NAIVASHA SOPA RESORT
We got to the resort late after another big day's driving, and sadly had to leave early the next morning. It is definitely the kind of place you should stay a minimum of 2 nights. You could look out from your balcony and see wild zebra and giraffe roaming through the grounds!
MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE (KENYA) staying at ASHNIL MARA CAMP
Travelling at this time of year I was able to see portions of the Great Migration, and it impossible to put into words how wonderful it is to look out and see hundreds, sometimes thousands of wildebeest.
NORTHERN SERENGETI (TANZANIA) staying at ANG'ATA MIGRATION BOLOGONJA CAMP
Although the long days of driving, both on safari and in between camps, can be tiring, there is something so magical about never knowing what you will see each day. Every location, every camp, each moment, has something different to offer.
KARATU (TANZANIA) staying at ANG'ATA NGORONGORO CAMP
Going into the crater we had the perfect day - the weather was excellent and we got to see so many animals. We were fortunate to get a glimpse of a wild rhino as well, but it was a long way away.
PWANI MCHANGANI (TANZANIA) staying at OCEAN PARADISE RESORT & SPA
After weeks on the go, although I did not want the trip to end, it was excellent to have a couple of days rest in Zanzibar at the end of the trip.
